The awakening of Rip Van Winkle is comparable to the situation that many of the Americans experienced during and after the American Revolution. Many of these early Americans resented the King of England but felt as though they owed a certain respect towards him. Likewise, Rip detested the constant nagging that he received from his wife, but still returned home so that she would not worry about his disappearance for what he believed to be only one night. He even left his dog whom was his only friend in the mountains after not being able to find him immediately. When he returned home and learned that he had been gone for 20 years, he was soon happy that he could go about his ways without the “tyranny” of Dame Van Winkle. Many of the Americans too felt as though they should remain loyal to the King during and after the war, persecuted by others as a Tory, but most soon appreciated the new freedoms they possessed and were able to realize how much they truly detested the King in hindsight.
